Excerpts from a Cat's Daily Diary..Day 983 of my captivity....

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am. Bastards.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now................

So Thursay of last week, I decide to get in the Car and Shoot over to see the Blogfather (credits to arseblogger on that term) and my Brother and Sister-In-Law along with my Godson and Nice (they are 2 different people by the way - as opposed to a transgender situation).

So I got my checklist.
1. The Doodle.

2. Shit for the The Doodle - Food, bowls, treats, scented golf balls etc.

3. Audi with Red Sox Plates. (Reccomend getting one if you have the means)

4. Clubs

5. Etc

So I am 45 Min into a 6-7 hour drive and my email- Blows up from 1. Unread Message to 53 un read messgaes over a period of 15 Min. This has only happened a handfull of times in the last 10 years. 2001 WTC, 2004 ALCS, 2004 World Series, etc - so I am thinking that some shit may have just been up...

And la-de-frigging da if I didn't have to hear for the next 6 hours about how Big Papi was on the list of 104 PED users, and as being on such list proves that everything the Red Sox did in 2004 was tainted, didn't mean anything, and we as fans should be ashamed. I actually got the following email from a NYY blogger.

Inherent in that statement is that there will be SOME HITTING! to go along with the great pitching. Ahem, I said SOME HITTING!

Still a long season and going 1-5 after the break while not ideal, is fortunately the exception as opposed to the rule here, and it happens. However it doesn't help when JD $14Million and only hitting .234 Drew compounds the problem by overthrowing the cut off man, which ultimately cost the Sox a Run last night. Actually he didn't overthrow the cut off man - he threw directly from right field to third base - and while I appreciate his arm, when he let the ball go the guy was already 2/3rds of the way to 3rd. Bad J.D. Bad J.D.

Clay Buchholz Awesome - in 4-1 Win

The last time we saw someone with the name Clay this awesome he was floating like a butterfly and stinging like a Bee. Combine that with the less than stellar outing by the 32 year old Halladay in the All Star game and this is a tricky situation.

Clay is not Halladay and may never be, however I am not sure how much longer Halladay is going to be Halladay either. One thing is for sure - Clay Buchholz would be starting every 5 days for any other team in the Majors and we have him sitting at AAA - we have to do something.

Just announced Clay Buchholz to start his first MLB game of the year in Toronto on Friday.

The Sox will start "the 2nd half" of the year with a six man rotation. 6 game road trip Six Starters.

Ok now it's against Toronto - who has Roy 'we may as well save him from the Brewers or Ya*kees' Halladay - Cy Young winner and proven stud - who is rumored to be on the trading block. Coincidence I think not.

Clearly we are looking to get Halladay - and our recent bullpen issues only reinforce the need.

Sox Bullpen Shi*'s The Bed - Again!

Well anyone in my neighborhood who thought they would be sleeping at 9PM CST last night - were awoken to those immortal words of John McEnroe.

Ah the joy of the June Swoon - except it is now July and really there is not much more to be said. They will either figure it out or they won't -

However I think I may be changing my stance on the whole Roy Halladay to the Red Sox for - name your prospect here - Roy would be 2 players in 1. The Starting Pitcher - and the Middle Relief Guy- cause he goes into the 7th inning usually with a low pitch count and few if any runs allowed - and right now that is all we seem to be able to handle.

So we are tied with the New York Ya*kees. - The funny part about that it that their fan base is overjoyed about it, and we see it as an annoyance and on several levels an admission of failure.

Quite simply the Red Sox assumptions - are the Ya*kee's Breakthroughs.

Well - why the heck not?

Great article today in the Boston Heralds outlining exactly the reasons why he should.

So as to not rehash that it is simple - I would like nothing more than to see the NL hitters looking like idiots trying to hit the knuckle ball.

As the rotations of the other pitchers go - he will be the most rested and the only other people that would make sense would be Justin Verlander of the Tigers or Zack Greinke of the KC Royals.

OK these guy are both young - both great Arms and would have about as much entertainment value as a Bob Dole Viagra commercial. Plus you know what - Timmy was to 11 wins first, guy is 42 years old and the son of a bitch has earned it. Plus - He Called ShotGun in 1992

Not to mention that Zack Greinke last time I checked was just checked out of the Psych ward last year with SAD (Social Anxiety Disorder) - the guy can't handle pressure situations.

Now (to change the train of though completely) the American League hasn't lost in like 12 years or something like that - and here is where the problem is with that - --- - - - The American League team usually hammers the National League team in the World Series - With the Exception of last year and the 2006 Tigers (Hence another reason not to start Verlander). So as the Ugly Red Sox fan I am no longer happy with just winning the World Series I want to win it in Boston. With the current 2 - 3- 2 format in the World Series - that just isn't going to happen if the Sox have Home Field Advantage - so in a way I kind of want the NL to win. More on that later - later as in when we actually get to August and are not riddled with injuries.

The Sox are not playing their best baseball - and on Wed night they were making Trevor Cahill look like Cy Young - until JD Drew finally broke through with a Monster Shot to the Right Field Bullpen.

The game was made "more interesting" by one of the dumbest errors of the season by Nick Green. He looked like a blindfolded child trying to find the Pinata which was second base, when all he really had to do was let the runner - run into him and apply the Tag.

Another Monster Home Run By Big Papi and 7 solid innings from Timmy proved to be just enough to get the win.

Johnny Papel"bomb" again proved to be closer by heart attack giving up a run in the ninth and barely missed giving up a 3 run shot that would have put the A's ahead by one in the ninth at the time.

Messy Messy Mistakes - we can not afford to make - but we got away with it tonight - hope no one is "satisfied" because there is some serious shit that needs to be worked out - and it starts for me with Mr Papelbon. I would make him miss the All Star Game in order to work his shit out.

Now while this is the "way it should be" I would rather see these guys -with the exception of Timmy Box of Chocolates get a rest"

Nothing like sticking it right back at Orioles this afternoon. Unfortunately I missed most of the comeback because - the Aforementioned - Arsenal Labradoodle - Shot 2 years of trust right in the ass by pulling off six 1/2 Pound Just Cooked Hamburgers off the Kitchen Counter. Thought my wife was messing with me - until I saw him with this - lets just say - less than Hungry look on his mug.

They didn't actually fall off the counter as much as they went right into his mouth, and to make matters worse - or better - my wife catches him licking the plate clean still on the counter - so I spend most of the comeback dealing with that, and you don't want to know - trust me - what you need to do to a dog that just ate that much meat to keep him from from becoming deathly ill.

He may be known as the Hamburglar going forward.

Anyway - off Day tomorrow - we are 48-30 - Well its all covered in the Cast...................

Yes folks it twas a combination of Edgar Allen Poe and Vincent Price that did the Sox in last night in Baltimore. Judging by the reaction over at Camden Chat you would have thought they just won the world series, but in the end they won - we or We lost and that's all that matters.

I would liken it to the USA Soccer Team beating the No. 1. Team in the world, Spain, last week in South Africa as it was that big of an upset, except I can't. Team USA, although they were out played the entire match on every statistical level but one, they won the battle of putting the ball in the net. Now while you could say the same for the Orioles ( I hate that fucking bird mostly because I have to use spell check to get it right every time I write it) with regard to putting runs across the plate - it isn't even close. 5-2 in the 9th - and then winning 6-5 is a comeback. 10-1 in the 7th and then winning 11-10 essentially in the 8th - is a sinister plot. And since we already have the Evil empire know as the New York Ya*kees, I am left with only on conclusion...

ESPN 540's Steve THE HOMER True suggested at the end of his program yesterday that Jeff Suppan is such a finesse pitcher that the Brewers should adjust his starts to coincide with Umpires who have a more liberal interpretation of the Strike Zone.

In a related move the Red Sox are trying to figure out how to adjust their schedule so Jon Lester can get 20 starts against the O's. The one recent constant in baseball has been if Jon Lester is taking the hill against the Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox are going to win.

Lester scattered five hits through seven shutout innings, featured his 96-mph fastball and an un-hittable curve. Did I mention he didn't walk anyone, while striking out 8. The win took him to 8-0 lifetime with a 2.18 ERA in 10 starts against the O's.

That just about raps it up for today. However there is this site called Camden Chat with a with Mourning O's fan's which is fairly funny to read.

Smoltz - Lowell - & The Birds

In tribute to Meatloaf (the artist not the food) the Red Sox after taking another 2 out of 3 (Ain't Bad) from a National League Opponent, blow back into the DC / Baltimore area for the 2nd time in a week, for a 3 game match up against the Birds and a boost to the local economy. Simple fact is for many Red Sox fans the only realistic way to not spend a small fortune and to get a good up close look at the team is to see them play on the road.

John Smoltz took a loss in his first game back last week against the Nationals.

Numbers wise - Not so Great

Reality - Pretty dam good.

How can both of these be true - well he allowed 4 runs in the first inning - not good - but during that same inning he also featured almost a 85%-90% offering of breaking balls - quite strange for a fastball pitcher. Whether this was the age old strategy of not showing everything in the first pass - I don't know - but that was the game plan it seems, and they stuck to it. Of course the one good thing with having all 9 men go to the plate in the first would be that you got the first pass over pretty quickly if not painlessly. Then he seemed to settle down - a lot. Although Smoltz allowed five runs in five innings, he retired his last eight batters and struck out the side in the fifth, and hit 94 MPH a couple of time in the process.

Were he playing on the Milwaukee Brewers or any other team in the AAAA Baseball division known as the National League Central - fans would be ecstatic.

Alas this is not he NL Central but the AL East - basically the difference between T ball and NCAA Div 1 baseball. So no one is penciling him in for postseason starts as of yet.

Back to my original Point - His numbers were terrible - but you take out the first inning and his numbers were great. He got stronger as the game went on - which given all else he had been through and his pedigree are all real pluses going forward. In any event one outing does not make a comeback - but so far so good - and remember - he is taking Daisuke's place in the rotation so its not like we actually lost anything.

Mike Lowell - we are told is having a "Miracle" Shot today which will coat the joint of his surgically repaired hip. Apparently the procedure either is an absolute success or does nothing, it all depends on the individual and how they react to it. Apart from the procedure we are being told that the pain Mikey L is experiencing is a "Normal Part" of the recovery process and not a setback.

I would really like to believe that, but I don't.

Mostly because of the body language of Lowell and Francona as theyexplained the procedure, and the "Normal Part" of the "This is Not A Set Back".

Which takes us to the Birds or in this case specifically the Orioles - well lets see they are 6-4 over there last 10 - and basically they SUCK. But they are a little weird in a "Don't take them for Granted" sort of way .. .... They go in the other weekend and Sweep the Phillies - who are a very good team although a bit banged up - then they get swept by the Fish in Miami- then take 2 out of 3 from the Nationals over the weekend. So who the heck knows - it should be a 3 game sweep for the Sox but once you start to actually think that way is when you start to loose. As Ted H once said - "When you are Green You Grow, and When you are Ripe you Rot!"

When I was 17 years old, my father told me about how the son of one of his High School friends had been drafted by our local team - The Detroit Tigers. Pretty sure I said something like - that's great and shortly forgot about it. That kid it turned out was John Smoltz, and my father and his were members of the high school band together.

(Washington DC 2009) In without a doubt what has turned into the most anticipated debut of a pitcher this season, John Smoltz will take the mound tonight for the Boston Red Sox as they go for the sweep against the Nationals. When the Sox signed the then 41 year old over the off-season it was with the expectation that he would contribute later in the season - but at the same time they felt that if he had to, he could have been ready in April, although that was not ideal.

All but Cavarretta are Hall of Famers, and he probably should be - ahem -veterans committee?

As any wise investor knows - past performance is no guarantee of future returns, but there is more than a modesty of hope that he will not only perform - but he will be much much better than average, with the chance of being outstanding. In any case it is historic - all the reason for you to watch. I know I will be paying a lot more attention tonight than I was in 1985.

In their first regular season visit since 1971 the Boston Red Sox's welcomed themselves back to DC with an 11-3 victory against the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night. Jason Bay reminded us why Theo is a Genius by collecting 4 hits, including his 19th homer and a two-run single that helped break open the game in the eighth inning.

A close game most of the way - until former Red Sox Journeyman pitcher - and resident Psychopath Julian Tavarez gave up the lead on a fly ball by Jason Varatek in the seventh inning. Manny Delcarmen (2-1) got the win in relief for the Red Sox, who have won 14 of 19 in June.

Apparently the Red Sox Travel well - according to A.P.-------The game was Red Sox Nation meets NatsTown, and the two nicknames proved to be accurate descriptions of the relative sizes of the fan bases. Unfortunately for the Sox last night it was a blues song as Ricky Nolasco only gave up one hit over 5 complete before the Rains Came.

With the way that Ricky Nolasco was pitching - it would have been great to see the game not get interrupted just to see if he could go all the way - if it ever got to the Bullpen - the Fish were done for. The truly sad thing is that at the time they actually called it - IT HAD STOPPED RAINING. But the little fishies had a plwane whyide they had to catch. If they had started it the Sox would have won - because it would have gone to the Bullpen. Most likely they would have won that is. If we miss a division title or a WC birth by one game - Then I will be all sorts of pissed. Until then fair play - I suppose.

It was a pleasure to watch the 8th and the 15+ trips Joe G took to the mound, Rumor has it Sprint is looking to get the Ya*kees on board for their Nextel Direct Connect Service. I am pretty sure there isn't a rule against them having a phone on the mound. Love to see that commercial.........what if Delivery People Managed the New York Ya*kees....... I should be a writer for SNL because that would be a funny skit. Anyway that is 8 in a Row, 9 if you count last year - and we are.

- Apparently the Ya*kees are having issues with their Sahshimi as well. However while ours aka Dice (stray from the strike zone) K is comical, in a tragic we could still trade him sort of way, theirs aka Wang is just screwed. He gave up 4 runs in 2 2/3's of an inning and actually lowered his ERA from 14.6 something to 14.4 something. He has the highest Starter ERA in the history of MLB after 5 starts.

- Lettuce er, Let us not loose sight of the big picture. The Failure(s) of the Ya*kees is not a measure of the Red Sox successes. We still have issues. Pap's is not Paps. Papi - may be coming around? Upgraded to "Work in Progress" from "Completely Done" - although there is something going on with him and if it is just a confidence thing then WOW. He has looked different the past 3 games. More Papi like - he got on base 3 times last night and absolutely crushed a 95MPH fastball to the deepest part of the Park - so how does one go from being behind - way behind on a 88MPH Ball less than a month ago to what he did last night? Must be the spinach. Perhaps it's Popeye instead of Papi? I am taking a wait and see approach.

Here is an Idea - Trade Dice K, Lugo,Lars Anderson and Brad Penny, to Florida for Handley R? and their Top Pitching Prospect - Call up Clay B and John S to pitch, with Masterson as the back up plan.

This solves the problem at Short - Solves the problem with the MVP of the WBC who simply will not adjust to life in the MLB and keeps me from pulling out my hair every time Dice Stray Pitches. May be too much to give up - may be too soon - but with Smoltz coming around - and Clay doing his thing it may just be what we need to fix our problems. You can not Trade Clay though.

Ok first things first - a little housekeeping, Ahem.

Ok with that out of the way - How awesome was JB and the Twins last night? Second outing in a row where it looked like he was going to No-Hit a team. As far as I am concerned the one hit he did give up was 110% weather related - Pedroia made the tough part of the play he needed to but the ball was wet and it slipped - it wasn't even a rushed thing it just slipped. The defensive play that Pedroia made was so awesome they had to give it as a hit - but the fact is the part of the play that actually prevented the out from being made was probably an error if not made immediately after such heroics.

So I was running through some news this morning and I came across this guy here who calls himself the New York Sports Jerk. Now while the words New York and Jerk are really synonymous they do fit quite well. Anyway-how, he basically rips his whole team and calls them all frauds because they lost the game last night. Not that they ran into the buzz saw that was JB. He may have a point in the later innings as we saw last week Beckett Leave in the 7th with a 10-0 win and then the bullpen walking a couple and then 3 straight errors to have the final score be 10-6 or something like that - I just found it really funny.

Tonight for the Ya*kees they go with the Taiwanese Porn Star Wang "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" Chung vs. Timmy Box of Chocolates Wakefield. Could be a long night -so lets hope as the song says......................................

Lesterific - 2 Hits Texas - Homer ESPN 540 Unimpressed with the Call

Jon Lester - Stud Extraordinaire - takes down the first 19 batters on Saturday Night before allowing a double with one out to Michael Young in the Seventh inning. Eventually Lester would pitch a complete game 2 hitter and allow one run - with the Sox winning 8-1 over the Texas Rangers.

Once again an immaculate job done by Don Orsillo of the NESN Broadcast team to keep the tradition of doing what he does during a no hitter going.

While people like Homer of ESPN540 in Milwaukee do not appreciate the tradition - there are those of us who do - so good job Don keep up the good work.

One other note - The player formerly known as Big Papi - David Ortiz hit his second home run of the season, a line drive down the right field line and just inside the Pesky Pole, which was part of a 4 run sixth inning. Now who doesn't want to see this guy back?

Also for the record. Homer- that is the world series trophy Lester is holding (to his left) Perhaps we will see one... One that is in Milwaukee - I am just holding my breath on that.

In the mean time - while you have your little show to do in Milwaukee - . I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom and that is to keep the tradition going. You weep for Brian Anderson and his messed up no hitter broadcasts, and you curse the Don Orsillo's of the world who do it right. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That the criticism of Anderson, while tragic in your mind anyway, perseveres tradition . And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, preserves tradition. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want Orsillo to persevere tradition, , you need Orsillo to persevere it, if for nothing more than for you to have something to talk about on your 26th or whatever it is market.

Red Sox nation use's words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something: Tradition -which the last time I checked after it left for Atlanta didn't show back up in Milwaukee until it got stolen from Seattle in 1972. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very tradition that the Nation provides, and then questions the manner in which it provides it. Sox 6 Tigers 3 - Tigers Fan's Sans Clue

Ok First things First -Sox 6 Tigers 3. I would almost be willing to bet I will never see, baring Injury to them - not to me, a pitcher be taken out in the Third Inning while throwing a no hitter. Of course I am fairly certain that I will not see a hit batsman followed by 4 straight walks either. The best was seeing Leland get ejected and then have to apologize for it after the game.

Now while the good guys won - again. Both of these last two game are not exactly installing confidence. I mean yes - it is a game, yes - shit happens, but last night we are up something like 10-0 with a no hitter into the seventh inning and then have to "Hold On" for a 10-5 Win. Courtesy of 3 straight errors. Then again today - the only time we can score is when Willis has a major and I mean MAJOR MELTDOWN, despite the fact we had the bases loaded and no one,out in the ninth. Followed by another "Outing" by Paps. Yet we have a share of the best record in the AL. Still we are kidding ourselves as fans if we at all feel comfortable.

The reality of any baseball season for me no matter how good things are going is simple - Talk to me in August. If you are still in it in August then - ok - but even then anything can happen especially with regard to Injury - or if you happen to have a guy like Manny Ramirez - a superstar to just decides to quit. So to have these concerns in June - is well,,,,,,,,,,,,, a concern. But it is a long season - we know what we need to do better however other than the need for a shortstop than can hit and field along with the Papi situation - their isn't a clear cut other consistent problem.

Now on to the Tiger Fans..

First - while driving out of Detroit we paid our final respects to Old Tiger Stadium - it will be finished being torn down this year - still the best place ever to see a game - better than Wrigley and I hate to say it better than Fenway.

Not to be one to pick on a town when it is down - but without a doubt the Tigers Fans

are what you could call Sans Clue.

Its nothing like when I left in 1989. It is like they don't even know a game is going on.

The worst is the standing up - for no reason in the middle of the play. Just hey now

After 2 Games of being force fed Hamburger Helper, the Boston Red Sox finally came through with some Manwich cuisine in Toronto. John Lester who decided to Rock Out with his Sox out strikes out 12 over 6 innings while only giving up one run, en-route to a 8-2 victory for the good guys.

-With support from Scott Rolen and Rod Barajas who both contributed two RBIs, right-hander Casey Janssen got his first win in over two years on Friday night as the Toronto Blue Jays snapped a 9 game loosing streak by defeating Knuckleball extraordinaire Tim Wakefiled and the Boston Red Sox by the score of 6-3.
Now I know that is what the media is going to say - and I know that is in fact what happened. But there is a much simpler explanation: The Box of Chocolates Postulate - Factoid -Theory /Theorem..................................

Simply stated - like Forest Gumps Box of Chocolates - When Wakefiled pitches - You never know what you are going to get. On Friday night he gave up 5 in the fifth and that was it.

One Bright Spot Boston RHP Daniel Bard struck out five in 2 1-3 scoreless innings of relief. Nice going Daniel. This kid could be the next Paps in the making.

Dice K's Pitching after the WBC has been more shaky than Micheal J Fox's hand during an earthquake.

Well that just about sums up how it went the other night in North London. As The Stranger once said to the Dude in the iconoclastic movie the Big Lebowski, "Some times you eat the bar and sometimes the bar eats you." Score one for the Bar - or Score 4 for the Bar and 1 for us.

If we had to lose -and the "if" is more of a phrase of speech at this point - I am glad we lost the way we did, because it provides the definitive answer to Arsene Wegners Postulate / Factoid / Theorem and Philosophy about molding a younger team made up of individuals with incredible raw talent into the precision machine that we have all come to know as the Arsenal.

The final analysis will show that it works well enough to beat about 90% of the teams in the world, however it falters when faced with similar talent which has experience. In fact the system works so well that our reserve team can beat just about 50% of the rest of the leagues first teams. But it isn't good enough for Arsenal, as the Arseblogger pointed out.

And before I'm accused of moaning or forgetting where we were before Wenger came along, I'll say this: Arsene Wenger is being judged by the standards that Arsene Wenger has set. Doubles, league titles, FA Cups. I don't think it's unfair to suggest we've fallen below the admittedly high standards we've grown accustomed to. Last week David Bush of the Milwaukee Brewers took a No Hitter into the 8th inning against the Philadelphia Phillies, when it was broken up by a pinch-hit home run off the right field foul pole.

There were 2 local Milwaukee Broadcasts of this game - Radio and Television. The Radio Team did not use the phrase "No-Hitter" at all up until this point, however one of the two TV announcers, was using the term like a child who just found out what the "baddest word" in the world was during a family reunion.

Immediately a debate broke out on the local airwaves regarding his repetitive use of the words "No Hitter", and the superstition that it will jinx the pitcher and break up the no hitter. This seemed to be the "hot point" of the discussion was simplistic enough to get Joe Talk Radio guy impassioned - and lit up the call in lines. Unfortunately both callers and radio professionals missed the point. Instead of focusing on the tradition of not doing it - they focused on the cause and effect of it. One station actually ran a poll asking if the mentioning of the phrase - was the cause of the outcome. I think this weeks poll is on "Mothers with Broken Backs and the Children Who Stepped on Cracks"

What got lost in the conversation - was the lack of respect for the tradition.

Now the broadcaster we are referring to here is a very good broadcaster - a bit 'cookie cutterish' - but very good at what he does. If I were hiring a broadcaster I wouldn't hesitate to hire him.

With the deluge of criticisms that came forward, was an equally loud defending by others in the local media that the most important part of the announcers responsibility was to let the fans know what was going on, and Fair Play to that.

I think we all would agree that it was imperative for anyone calling the game to call attention- rather - scream attention to what was going on, to the fact that it is a major deal, and the fact that anyone within listening or viewing distance of the broadcast should stop what they were doing and alert everyone they know to tune in. Alert them to the fact that through X innings that the only 2 or so runners to reach were by a walk and a hit batter. Alert them to the fact Bush is doing something that hasn't been done by a Brewer pitcher in 22 years, or perhaps do just as I did by telling everyone I know to "Stop what you are Doing and Turn on the Brewers Game and witness something special." - he obviously has to talk about it. I just did and you know what - I did it without using THE PHRASE.

It was his choice to use THE PHRASE. I believe it was a poor choice. I do not believe that Fox Sports Wisconsin directed the announcer to actually use THE PHRASE or any variant of it. And if they did - I would suggest to them they should spend more time getting every game on the Air in HD and less time censoring - or I suppose reverse censoring their broadcasters.

The bottom line for me: there is a tradition, you don't "change" tradition you only either honor it or you don't. It is a relatively innocuous -tradition surrounding the game - the game that is our national past time, the game which was put into perspective by Darth Vader - er James Earl Jones in the Movie Field of Dreams -

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It's been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt, and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game, is a part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that once was good, and it could be again....."

It is a tradition that it woven into the fabric of the game, that tradition does not stop when you yourself stop playing the game. It's a tradition whether you ever played the game. It's a tradition that doesn't impede progress, it doesn't hurt anyone, and has no cost. So you either honor that tradition or you don't.

As far as the responsibility of the announcers to the audience - well you tell me - "At the MLB level Should the on Air Talent have the skills to communicate a No Hitter is in progress - without actually saying "No Hitter"?

I would say the answer is a resounding Yes!

Whether they choose to is a different question. The announcers who respect the tradition and have the ability to convey the meaning of a no-hitter without saying it earn the respect of the people who follow the tradition. The announcers who don't respect or are not aware of the tradition, or don't have the ability, or choose not to honor the tradition earn the ire of those same people

So I have the Blackberry Storm set to refresh the game off the ESPN feed and - I proceed to see another 5 - 6 goals over the next 20 minutes - I thought the thing was broken. Although it ended 4-4 - Andrei Arshavin scored all the Arsenal Goals at Anfield. He will now be referred to from now on at St. Andrei of Arsenal. Hey there were a lot of things Arsenal did wrong last night - and I will let others focus on that - But this guys performance was simply incredible.

Mark Fidrych

Mark Fidrych was killed in an apparent accident Monday at his farm in Massachusetts. He is the second Detroit Tiger icon to pass this year. You know, 2009 is really turning out to be a poor year.

One thing I remember about the summer of 1976—I was eight years old at the time—was Mark "The Bird" Fidrych. He was incredible. At the time I liked him as much for his antics: talking to the ball, talking to the hitters, introducing the hitters to the ball and the ball to the hitters, and then telling the ball what to do when he threw it to the hitters, getting on his hands and knees and grooming the mound with his hands, as I did for his pitching. It has been said when coaches or players would approach him on the mound, they would feel as if they were interrupting a conversation, but they would then realize that they were alone with him on the mound.

In 1976 there wasn't anything going on in Detroit and less with the Tigers. The way you could tell if "The Bird" was pitching, was simple: If there were 50,000+ people in the stands, he was pitching. If there were less than 15,000 in the stands, he wasn't.

He had stellar stuff for a year and a half. He got injured and essentially his career was over.

However, and I could be wrong on this, I do not believe there has ever been or will ever be a player who will play for such a short time and have such a profound impact on the game and for lack of a better term—pop culture.

We will continue to miss "The Bird."

Yes the week was only 1/2 over and we were already giving out the award to Duchebag Umpire Bob Davidson. Who's wide strike zone was so wide on Wed night, that the only way you could hit the "outside Strike" was with a bat the length of a Giraffes neck.

Lets just set aside the fact(s)-

....... that there were a number of balls which clearly were more than 6" wider than the K zone layover

....... that both Jason Bay and Jed Lowier went ape shit over the calls

....... that the calls were so fucked up that someone, and I swear it wasn't me, actually adjusted the guys wikipedia page to reference the game - as seen here.

On April 9, 2009, [Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Redsox] Davidson called Jason Bay out on strikes

on a pitch that replays showed was clearly low and outside.The Redsox were down 5-1, with two

men on and one out in the sixth inning. Davidson called several other questionable pitches for

strikes against the Redsox, including two called strikes to Jed Lowrie in a bases loaded, two out

situation in the 8th. Replays clearly showed that several of Davidson's called strikes were 6-8 inches

off the plate, but Davidson continued to call them for strikes, in part, due to Tampa Bay catcher

Dioner Navarro setting up his glove off the plate so as not to have to move his glove to make the

catch. Davidson consistently called pitches that were clearly off the plate forstrikes, causing Redsox

hitters such as David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Jason Bay, Jed Lowrie and Jason Varitek to swing at

pitches that were clearly outside, but would likelyhave been called strikes by Davidson. Davidson's

tremendously expanded strikezone was the subject of repeated commentary by ESPN analyst

Rick Suttcliffe. ESPN/ Questec replays confirmed Suttcliffe's criticisms of Davidson's calls.

Now that is a really long, and well written way to say in the word of Dick Cheney - The Guy is A Total

The Strike Zone and it's SLIGHTLY different interpretation between umpires - is one of the

things that makes the game of baseball great.

and saying- as Davidson did apparently- "Abner Doubleday can go screw himself".

I don't know that the Red Sox would have won the game, but I do know that at least it could have been

Arsenal Start Playing here at 1:45PM at Vilarreal and The Red Sox have moved their opening day to 3:05PM. Due to the rainout.

Which mean that for the first time - that I can remember anyway both of these two teams will be playing at the exact same time.

Since then 3 Arsenal Players - including superstar Robin Van Pierse have since reported injuries.

Sox Looking Good - But Does It Matter?

OK, I watched my first full five innings of a Red Sox Spring Training game yesterday—Ho Hum.

Brad Penny got off to a rusty start, gave up a few runs in the first and then pitched three more scoreless innings. Not bad for a guy who is vying for the No 5. starter's roll.

On the other side of the field, we had surgically repaired superstar Fracisco Liriano for the Twins, who looked un-hittable, until he wasn't, and then he looked like, well, a normal guy getting killed by the Red Sox batters.

Does it matter?

Well, yes and no.

At this point, we do not have any key injuries or holes, so that does matter in the sense that we have no "built- in" negatives going into the season. I still want to see how The Big Sashimi (Dice K) bounces back from his WBC work.

I am not sure if Lowell is going to be his same old—er young—self at third base after his offseason surgery. He did, however, make a play at third yesterday that erased any doubt about his fielding prowess. He just needs to get the hitting back.

The "If Come bet" we placed on Smoltz is looking very good, so good that we can take him back very very slow.

Man, can you imagine a healthy and firing-on-all-cylinders John Smoltz to pull out of the bag in June or July? I can see it now:

One of our starters needs a little rest, I guess we'll just have to make due with this guy. I wonder how the rest of the AL East will feel about that.

Papi looks good, but with a bit less pop; however, I do think his best attribute thus far, his clutch hitting, is still there.

OK, I am looking at the Sox and they look really, really, really Good. In fact, they look great, but they don't look like a lock, which to tell the truth, is a good thing.

Last year's lock was the Detroit Tigers—and we all saw how that worked out.

It is a long season, so lets take a look at it again come the All Star Break. But with that said, you have to say with the way things look now, there is a fairly large gape between the top three teams in this division—Sox, Rays, Spankees—and the rest of the AL.

The pressure, you have to think, is on the Spankees; they spent so much money—a considerable amount with Clients of the Great Satan Uber Agent Scott Borass—that you can't help but think they have extreme expectations to live up to. CC usually chokes in the postseason, so if the Spanks do make it to the postseason, we have that to look forward to.

Anyway,it is just too early to tell, but one this is for sure: it is going to be great to watch the race. Now if I could only find a good chair...

Reports out of Togo seem to have a disconnect with reports out of London regarding the status of one ADE. They want him to play and we have said no way - we will see I suppose. They guy has missed 10 matched for Arsenal and his first games back are for his country which have no chance of winning anything - ever? Hey don't get me wrong, but he makes about the same as 5% of the GDP of Togo, so if they bring him back and he isn't ready - who really gets screwed in that deal ? - That would be Arsenal -so Togo - if you listening - win without him.

There is a report that Amaury Bischoff "has options other than Arsenal" after his current contract expires. I would say that Arsenal has options as well, of course it came from Goal.com and an agent was involved so realistically I would be more inclined to believe it from the Devil himself than those sources.

Growing up in Detroit in the 1970's and 1980's there wasn't a lot to be thrilled about. As a kid having never lived anywhere else you really didn't know the difference. Then again, as a kid I mean how much more would you be doing - short of surfing - I suppose we had just as much to do as any other city kids across the country... We just had to watch out for bullets a little bit more.

One of the best things we had, and this is something I didn't realize until I was an adult, was our baseball stadium and our announcers. I still to this day remember sitting in Tiger Stadium absolutely almost on top of the players, and watching the likes of Allen Trammel, Lou Whitiker, Lance Parish, Jack Morris, and Kirk Gibson do their thing. And we are talking close - Like touch the players close. I remember sitting along the first base line when Kirk Gibson hit a ball over the right field roof and see the ball go out of the park, not on a screen but to be close enough to see the actual ball. I have always loved Fenway Park in Boston, and when people ask me what is so great about Fenway, one of the answers I always give is that it comes the closest to what Tiger Stadium was.

While not going to games, which if we were lucky we would make it to 3 a year, we would listen to the games on TV and Radio. So I ended up listening to the likes of Ernie Harwell, George Kell, who arguably as announcers are in the 10 best that ever called the games. I am too young to ever have seen George Play, but the images, sounds, and memories of Tiger Stadium and the voices of George Kell and Ernie Harwell define Baseball for me and millions of other fans.

CURT SCHILLING RETIRES

Bloody Sock and all - Curt Schilling Announced his retirement today. Should be a first ballot Hall of Famer. This would be the case for me if he didn't do anything except pitch and win those 2 games in the 2004 playoffs against the Yankees and the Cardinals to bring Boston their first World Series in 86 years. The guy made 2 starts - each with about 55 stitches in his ankle, and proceeded to only allow 8 hits and one run in 13 innings.

A much better pitcher than public relations manager, Curt never missed an opportunity to speak his mind, most of the time he held his own, but some of the time his passions got the better of him, usually when he just spoke his mind. He at times alienated teammates, but much more often than not the guy was dead on right. He took on many subjects which most people shied away from discussing.

For me it was refreshing - agree with him or not at least you know where he stands. Hope everyone ate their Lucky Charms This Morning, and if you happen to be an Arsenal Player who is taking on Hull this afternoon (Chicago / Milwaukee Time) in the FA Cup - then stick with the Wheaties.

Ah, St Patrick's Day, and what a lovely day it is going to be weather wise - apparently both here in the MKE (70 Fahrenheit) and in Dublin - at least it looked like a great day on the Today show this morning, although I have a bit of difficulty believing Al Rooker is really Irish - but today we all are.

A Special St. Patrick's Day Greeting to the Arseblogger the Irish Patron St. of Football- who hales from the fine city of Dublin and writes a most excellent blog. Also a special St. Patrick's Day Greeting to my Brother-in-Law - David H. Now Dave is an American, but he works with a number of Europeans and he has been trying to convince me that everyone he meets in Europe hates Arsenal. Today it is Hull in the FA cup. Not going to say much about the match - I am getting mixed reports on whether Arshavin will be able to play with the injury he got during the Blackburn game, which required about 5 stitches on his ankle to close a cut. I would recommend he take a look at this Curt Schilling article from back in 2004 and act accordingly.

VICTORY AND BEYOND

Short Entry here. We somehow have gone on to the Final 8 of the Champions League. However a 0-1 Loss which comes on the heels of a 1-0 victory (the 1 being a penally shot) in London,( ah London I do love that town), and winning it in a sudden death 7-6 penalty shot differential is not resoundingly reassuring.

I am happy with the victory, but lets face it - where it's at vs where it needs to be are miles apart. (Much like the current Status of the Human Race)

That being said through the course of any season there are going to be elements of luck, and while you don't want to have to rely on it, you should appreciated it when you get it. In this case our Good Luck is Roma's Bad Luck. (You can tell that this Cuntly McDago was not happy)

And as they say - with a little Love and Luck - you will get by
